All the ugly gangsta lies are here, especially as regards the brutalization of women and the business of death.
But they are incidental to the mood of the piece, which is friendly, relaxed, good-humored, and in the groove. The Massacre is predestined to ‘another smash. 50 Cents’ style has always been both more and less subtle.
For Get In My Car the producer Hi-Tek contributes a sluggish backbeat and a sprightly five-note guitar lick while 50 Cent shows off his perverse charm. For So Amazing, 50 Cent delivers thug-love boilerplate while Olivia sings an RandB refrain. And A Baltimore Love Thing takes this thug-love formula in an unexpected direction. On a track like Ski Mask Way, a criminal-minded rhyme with a velvety beat by Disco D, it’s clear that none of this really matters: like many a hustler before him, 50 Cent has found out that giving people what they want isn’t always the same as giving them what they’re asking for.
