Oscar winning British film legend Sir John Mills dies
Oscar-winning British actor Sir John Mills has died at 97 at home in Denham, west of London, after a short illness; details of which were not revealed by his trustees.
Ranked #88 in Empire (UK) magazine’s “The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time” list, Sir John Mills starred in variety of roles including those in “Gandhi” and “Ryan’s Daughter.” He was appointed a CBE in 1960 and knighted in 1976.
He won the Academy for best Supporting Actor in 1971 for his role in ‘Ryan’s Daughter’.
Mills was born on Feb. 22, 1908 in Felixstowe, England. His father was a mathematics teacher father and his mother was a theatre box-officer. His ex-wife, Aileen Raymond, is the mother of Ian Ogilvy.
He is survived by three daughters Juliet Mills and Hayley Mills and Jonathan Mills from his first wife Mary Hayley Bell. His grandson is Crispian Mills, lead singer of Kula Shaker.
