Movie Review: Black Friday

Director: Anurag Kashyap
Producer: Midday

Black is the color of the season with ‘Blackmail’ and ‘Black Friday’ releasing today and Sanjay Leela Bansali’s ‘Black’ in queue.

With movie ‘Black Friday’ already in news after Mumbai High Court ordered a stay on its screening Anurag Kashyap and controversies will soon become synonym with each other (His earlier film ‘Panch’ remains unreleased till date due to trouble with censor).

Black Friday: Story
Black Friday is a film that closely follows the event that shocked Mumbai on 2nd March 1993 with a series of bomb blasts that ripped the city apart. Mumbai hasn’t been same since. In ‘Back Friday’ Anurag Kashyap dares to revisit the politically volatile incident with a hawk eye.

Following the bomb blast top-cop Rakesh Maria (Kay Kay) is handed over the task of catching the culprits.

Police cracks the whip on criminals and pulls all stops to bring culprits to book. Several more vehicles ridden with explosives are discovered. Tiger Menon, It’s soon revealed that Tiger Memon, a businessman from the Muslim dominated area of Mahim, had taken funds from the underworld in Dubai (such as Dawood Ibrahim) and hired people for the job. The men are now shuttling from one area to another, with police hot on their trail.

Black Friday is not about how people suffered due to bomb blast. It’s rather a dark tale of why, how and what happened next? After the blasts the movie scripts the mind games and drama that follows.

Director Anurag Kashyap’s ability to handle scripts was never in question after Satya. In Black Friday he proves he can realize his scripts on screen. Black Friday moves in flashbacks and Anurag has handled them well.

Kay Kay has done a commendable job as policeman.

Though courts have directed the makers to remove ‘True Story’ tagline from Black Friday, the movie is an almost chronological description of events that shaped Mumbai Bomb blast in 1993 and what happened hence.

Black Friday is the best release of 2005. If you ‘Satya’ and still mark ‘ab Tak Chappan’ as your favorite film Black Friday is what we recommend for this weekend.
