Amrita Thappar is Femina Miss India 2005

The wait is finally over. The dazzling beauty from Pune, Amrita Thappar was declared as the Pond’s Femina Miss India-Universe 2005 at a glittering ceremony in Mumbai tonight.

Coming from an Army background, Amrita hails from Pune and holds a Post Graduate in Fashion Designing from School of Fashion Technology. She has won the local Miss Pune Beauty title, has been May Queen and has done few music videos and print ads. Being creatively inclined, she likes working with fabrics to bring out their color and form. Owing to a background as a designer, she likes sketching in various mediums like charcoal, pastels, etc. She also enjoys reading motivational and spiritual quotes or anecdotes, and practices a basic form of kickboxing. Amrita also likes adventure sports like mountain climbing and rippling.

Amrita was crowned Miss India by last year’s winner Tanushree Dutta.

Vijayawada’s Sindhura Gadde was crowned Miss India World 2005.

Twenty-year-old Sindhura, who has spent half her time in New Zealand holds a double degree in pharmacology and physiology as well as a diploma in modeling. An avid winter sports enthusiast, she loves ice skating and snow boarding. A student of pharmacology she has undertaken a few modeling assignments in Australia and New Zealand.

Niharika Singh of Uttaranchal, who has been modelling for the last three years and has acted in a few music videos, was crowned Miss India Earth 2005.

Femina Miss India Earth 2005 Niharika also picked up Ms Beautiful Hair and Ms Photogenic awards also.

The annual beauty pageant, sponsored for the second consecutive year by consumer goods major Ponds, had received over 9,000 applications. The hunt for the three finalists was narrowed down to 23 contestants earlier this month.

Priyanka Jha of Delhi and Priya Nayak of Bangalore made it to the finals but could not finish among the winners.

The three beauty ambassadors will represent the country in international pageants.

The panel of judges included actors Pooja Bedi, Suniel Shetty, Celina Jaitley, Kareena Kapoor, Olympic silver medalist Rajvardhan Rathore, writer Shoba De and industrialist Anand Mahendra. The surprise element was Pooja Swamy, one of the judges, selected through a competition.

The highest number of contestants for the finals - seven - were from Delhi followed by Mumbai (five), Bangalore (three), Pune, Muradabad, Patna, Uttaranchal, Chennai, Chandigarh, Vijayawada and Guwahati (one each).

The audience at the show were entertained by Indian idol winner Abhijeet Sawant, Yana Gupta, Bombay Rockers among others. The show was hosted by Mona Singh (Jassi of Jassi Jaisa Koi Nahi fame) and Samir Soni.
