What happens when Indian Cinemas Idols like Yash Chopra, Lata Mangeshkar and Late Madan Mohan come together? A timeless classical extravaganza that is bound to make people sit up and notice. Madan Mohan created magical melodies years ago and it is back to enchant us with his eternal soulful music. Yash Chopra has used some un-used tunes of Late Madan Mohan for Veer Zaara. The music has been recreated by Sanjeev Kohli. Javed Akhtar provided the lyrics and voila we have a modern classic waiting to be unveiled. The songs of the movie have been sung by the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Gurdas Mann, Roop Kumar Rathod, Ahmed Hussain and Mohd. Hussain.
Songs review:
1. Tere Liye (5.34) is the title track of the movie, wonderfully sung by Lata and Roop Kumar Rathod. It’s a soulful melody which would be loved by everyone. The song captures the pain the lovers go through. It’s not an emotional song; it gives hope to broken hearts. The hope that one day the ordeal would end and they will get their loved once. A match winner.
2. Main Yahaan Hoon (4.57) is sung by Yash Chopra’s favorite singer Udit Narayan. A melodious song to the hilt, it’s hum-able and highly recommended.
3. Aisa Des Hai Mera (7.10) is sung by Ahmed Hussain, Mohd, Hussain, Mohd. Vakil, Javed Hussain, Aisa Desh Hai Mera is a patriotic kinda song. Kinda okay dokay. They tried to do a ‘Jis Desh mein dal dal parr..’ but lyrics don’t touch your soul.
4. Yeh Hum Aa Gaye Hai Kahan (5.45) - My favorite and probably the best song in the album, sung by Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar, the romantic number reminds you of Raj kapoor and Nargis drenched in rain… makes you fall in love. ‘Yeh Hum Aa Gaye ..’ was to be the title of the movie. But apparently at the last moment they decided to change it to ‘Veer Zaara’.
5. Do Pal (4.28) is an emotional number sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Sonu Nigam. A classic; emotional numbers don’t get better than this.
6. Kyon Hawa (6.14) is the virginal expression by a lover of his love. Have you ever expressed the mesmerizing feeling of being in love? Sonu Nigam croons his heart out. Lata Mangeshkar joins him. And a bonus, Yash Chopra renders few lines to celebrate love.
7. Hum To Bhai Jaise Hain (4.20) is a usual masti-baazi song sung by Lata Mangeshkar, reminds you of Kajol singing ‘Meray Khaabon Mein Jo Aayee’ in DDLJ.
8. Aaya Tere Dar Par (7.53) sung by Ahmed Hussain, Mohd, Hussain, Mohd. Vakil, Javed Hussain is a qawwali number. It’s a nice number, not a classie but the best one I have listened to in recent times. ‘Aaya Tere Dar Par Deewaana’ tells the afsana of a lover who is searching for the lost love. Bravo
9. Lodi (6.55) - No points for guessing, it’s a Punjabi number sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan and Gurdas Mann. Lata is un-stoppable and Gurdas is energetic. Udit tries hard to meet the energy level. The song is a passe.
10. Tum Paas Aa Rahe Ho (5.12) * - Talk of slow romantic songs and the name that comes to your mind - Jagjit Singh. Add to it a melody named Lata and u have ‘Chupke Chupke Tum Paas Aa Rahe Ho’. And together they come and steal our heart. This is the best slow and romantic number in today’s time, maybe decades. Made to listen again and again, tailor made for those wonderful evenings when you are alone - A MASTERPIECE.
11. Jane Kyon (5.16) * - Lata Mangeshkar renders her homage to love. And we salute her. She is superb in this beautifully penned romantic number. Reminds you of several forgotten love stories waiting to be told and times gone by.
* These songs do not appear in the film and have been specially recorded for the album.
The music of Veer Zaara is a novel experience. The music by Late Madan Mohan is melodious, no doubt about it. It touches your heart by the sheer momentum of an emotion called Love; perfect platform for a Yash Raj movie. But do we have lyricists to match the likes of Anand Bakshi, Majru Sultanpuri, Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri… and the likes? Somewhere down the line you feel that lyrics don’t do the justice to the great maestro’s music.
Bottom Line: Buy the cassette; give it a try and some time to develop on you. And, come fall in love.
