Painful Beginning
When Mahesh (Bhatt) uncle and Vikram Bhatt offered me Footpath, I first declined the offer. But they asked me to reconsider. I gave 30 retakes out of nervousness for my first shot, which was with Aftab Shivdasani, and so acting for me had a painful beginning. But now it is a passion.

Cinema love
The acclaim gives me a high. But more than that, I love cinema. I love sitting in on the editing of Mukesh (Bhatt) uncle’s films, and if I had not become an actor I would have worked on visual effects and graphics. I have even done a course in 3-D and ‘Maya’.

Chartbusters no coincidences

Yeah, I like sitting in on the music of my films, and otherwise getting involved in them. It was my fiancee Parvin Sahani who found ‘kaho na kaho’ on the Internet and made me listen to it. I took it to my uncles and Anurag and we used it for Murder. I also took ’sine ni sine ni’ to Mohit but the song sounded out-of-place in the film and I persuaded him to give it to Babloo Pachisiaji for Jawani Diwani.

Hashmi Hits
As an actor, I prefer to listen to my music along with the script, because they have to be related to each other. What I am especially thrilled about is the fact that each hit song of mine has been a major singing break for different singers, whether it is Kunal Ganjawala and Amir Jamal in ‘Murder’, Atif in ‘Zeher’, Himesh Reshammiya in ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ and ‘Aksar’ and Bobby Moon and Suhas in ‘Jawani Diwani’.

Fiancee reaction to hot scenes
She is a very sensible girl and trusts me about drawing the line at being professional, whether it is in the matter of kissing or hot scenes. Parvin knows that I am an actor and that if there are pros about my profession, there are also cons. Yes, I would be lying if I said that she is indifferent, but I am grateful that she accepts gracefully the fact that I am an actor identified with hot kisses.

Naughty-naughty
Parvin also understands that I cannot be half-hearted about doing any scene or portraying any emotion, or it will show on screen.

Varied Roles
I have no qualms about the varied characters I play. Name one other actor whose first film had him in a supporting role, the second as a villain (Murder) and yet signed outside films. It’s great to take risks. Murder itself was a very risky subject for its time, but the film raked in 22 crores and most of the audiences were women.

Forthcoming films
My musical reputation made my uncles ask me to essay the guy with songs instead (Gangster)! But I am doing Killer, Subhash Ghai’s Good Boy Bad Boy, all of which have strong characters.
