IIFA Awards Amsterdam Report

IIFA Awards Amsterdam Report

Yash Chopra’s Indo-Pak romance epic “Veer-Zaara” swept the sixth IIFA awards in Amsterdam Saturday night. The movie won the best actor, best director, best film, best music, best story and best supporting actress awards.

Shah Rukh Khan was the obvious choice for the best actor award, and his win surprised few.

Yash Chopra, who won in the best director category, had last directed “Dil to Pagal Hai” in 1997. Aditya Chopra bagged the best story award for his father’s romantic saga.

Rani Mukherjee was a beaming best actress for “Hum Tum”, another Yash Chopra production. She also won the best supporting actress award for “Veer-Zaara”.

In fact, Rani has established a record of sorts by winning double honours at almost every award function this year.

The best music director award was given to the late Madan Mohan. The late genius’ son Sanjeev Kohli who re-created Madan Mohan’s tunes for the film, paid a sentimental tribute to his father, who in spite of being a powerhouse of talent, never won a popular award during his lifetime.

Abhishek Bachchan walked away with the best supporting actor’s award for “Yuva”, and John Abraham was the best villain - for “Dhoom”.

The pretty Ayesha Takia was announced as the best debutante.

Surprisingly, Sammir Dattani’s notable debut has gone unacknowledged through all the popular award ceremonies this year.

The rest of the awards were no surprises, except Akshay Kumar who was chosen for best comic role in “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi”.
