India out of Oscar Paheli
Nominations for the 78th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday night and both Paheli (Shah Rukh, Rani Mukherjee) and Morning Raga (Surya Prakash, Shabana Azmi, Perizaad Zorabian) which were India’s ticket to Oscar Awards failed to get any place in the nominations.
Director Amol Palekar’s Paheli was the official entry in the foreign language category and Morning Raga had been entered independently by director Mahesh Dattani.
Paheli lost to films from Italy, Palestine, South Africa and Germany to the best foreign language film category nomination instead critics favorite ‘Brokeback Mountain’ got nominations in major categories.
Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan said that even though Paheli didn’t make it to the Oscars, he was proud of his work. “If it could have happened through a film that I was associated with, it would have made be doubly proud. It makes me proud anyway,” Khan said. “I am not disappointed”, he added.
‘Paheli’ is based on renowned Rajasthani author Vijaydan Detha’s story of a woman who falls in love with a ghost and the tricky moral issues that the villagers face when her husband returns after many years.
No Indian film has managed to get an Oscar so far. Till now only three films, Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s ‘Lagaan’ - have till now won a nomination at the Oscars.
The 78th Academy Awards ceremony would be held on March 5.
