Veer Zaara Movie Review

Yeah, I am talking about Yash Chopra’s new soon-to-be-released film Veer Zara starring Sharukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani ‘bad throat’ Mukherjee. The music of the film is out and believe me it is really phenomenal.

The music is taken from Late Madan Mohan’s unutilized compositions. some of these compositions are 50 years old, which never saw light of the day, as they were probably saved up for this film.

My favourite Lata Mangeshar, who has quit singing at this age of 75 has sung 9 songs for the film. The film have Indo -Pak background and have punjabi essence in it like Yash Chopra’s other films. I bought the Audio CD of the film- its a set of two CDs –one is the movie tracks and the other one is the making of the music.

The CD have 9 songs in it and 2 additional songs which are not there in the film. All songs are sung brilliantly by the finest singers of the country including Lata Mangeshkar, Jagjit Singh, Udit Narayan, Gurdaas Mann, Sonu Nigam, Roop kumar Rathod etc. The magic Lyricist Javed Akhtar has given out his best once again. I am sure he will win ‘The best Lyricist’ award for this film. The music is recreated from the old instruments to the likings of todays generation by Sanjeev Kohli.

The first song of the album ‘Tere liye’ sung by Lataji and Roop Kumar Rathod is packed with emotions. The ‘Lodi’ song by Lataji, Udit Narayan and Gurdaas Mann is really great. The songs ‘Aisa desh hai mera’, ‘Do Pal’, ‘Main Yahan hoon’ and ‘Kyon Hawa’ are simply superb. The Quwali ‘ Aaya hai tere dar par’ is also good. All in all a great collection of songs of different moods, shades and emotions.

Now about the second CD - The making of the music - this CD contains the original 50 year old melodies of Late Madan Mohan ji , sung over a harmonium. and how they have picked the tone of the original melody by new instruments is really really amazing. Madan ji’s voice excerpts are there which are very nice, I felt that he was really a great composer Indian Cinema ever had. This is really a collectable CD. I rate the music of VEER ZARA as 8 outa 10.

Lastly, In Madan ji’s words - “All songs are Melodious, Emotional and HINDUSTANI”.
