After the blockbuster ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra has teamed up yet again with Sanjay Dutt, this time for ‘Parineeta - The Married Woman’. PARINEETA is a story of these four lead characters Girish (Sanjay Dutt), Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan), Koel (Raima Sen) and Lolita (Vidya Balan) - how their lives are intermingled with each other. The complexities in relationships form the base of this classic tale of love, hate and deceit. Sarat Chandra’s timeless story explores this difference in a man and a woman’s perception of love commitment. The movie has a special appearence by Dia Mirza and a Rekha appears in a song which insiders say reminds you of ‘Umrao Jaan’. Read Parineeta Movie Preview

Music Review

One word of caution, don’t compair Parineeta with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s melodious masterpiece ‘1942- A Love Story’. Parineeta is a melodious and touching in parts.

Side A has three songs; first being ‘Piyu Bole’ followed by ‘Kasto Mazza’ and ‘Raat Hamari To’, each being laced with mouth watering sausage named Bengali Music.

Piyu Bole [4: 26]: Album begins with the slow and melodious ‘Piyu Bole’ in voices of Sonu Nigam and a re-invented Shreya Ghosal. The music is slow but refreshing like sunlight. Swanand Kirkire lyrics talk about river and sea, air and earth and compair them with love. A song to treasure for long time.

Kasto Mazza/Yeh Hawayein Gungunia puchhe tu hai kaha [4: 42]: The song begings with a chorux ‘Kasto Mazza’ (folk song) and makes way for Hindi renderation ‘Yeh Hawayein Gungunia puchhe tu hai kaha’. A song picturised in train (like Mere Sapno Ke Rani) the music has huffs and puffs of a steam engine. A lover traveling home to meet his love, searching for love in flowers, wind and nature. Sonu Nigam is brilliant and Sunidhi Chauhan drops by in between. The song is a passe.

Raat Hamari To [5:22 ]: A slow and sad bengali folk number in the voices of Lyricist Swanand and Chitra trasends carries it in her melodious voice. The song travels through the lonely and traumatic phases of lonely night. “Raat hamari Chand ki saheli hai” - the line tries to show bondage between night and moon - with meaningful lyrics. A classical music is the backbone of the song. Chitra is first rate in the song.

Side B has four songs ‘Soona Man Ka Aangan’, ‘Kaisi Paheli Zindagaani’, ‘Dhinak Dhinak Dha’ and ‘Hui Main Parineeta’.

Soona Man Ka Aangan [4:26 ]: Soulful and melodious “Soona Man Ka Aangan” touches heart with penetrative voices of Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The song tells the story of a lonely heart remembering his love. But song has many shades with several moods. Excellent lyrics, top rate voices and ditto for music.

Kaisi Paheli Zindagaani [4:06 ]: Hear this song and you will find yourself on the set of some Guru Dutt song. Classical western Jazz in the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan. The lyrics are first rate and song will appear as an item number (did we say Rekha in new style) at some important juncture in the move. The word Paheli in the song points towards a turning point in the script.

Dhinak Dhinak Dha [3:58]: A fun filled marriage song in the voice of folk singer Rita Ganguly. Elderly woman of the family (Mausi) narrates the funny and hilarious instances of the bondage between “dulha” (bridegroom) and “dulhan” (bride). The soundtrack sounds situational and tailor- made for the script of the film.

Hui Main Parineeta [2:46]: Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal return in the second version of ‘Piyu Bole’. While the first one was joyous this one is more romantic quiet sentimental stuff with lover praising his love. Impressive.

All said done Parineeta is a truly different fare we hear usually. Bengali music at its best the songs of the album are situational and recommened for those looking for something different (not exactly Gazals and neither Pop).
