The remake of the Bengali film “Charulata” is being proposed by two famous directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali and London-based filmmaker Amitabh Neil Ray. The initial film “Charulata” was made by Satyajit Ray in the year 1964 and the film was shown in the 1965 Berlin Film Festival and Ray was given the second Silver Bear award in the festival for the film. The film is based on the story written by Rabindranath Tagore called Nastanirh (The broken Nest).

The story is about a woman named Charulata, who lived in the 19th century who is neglected by her husband Bhupati, who is a politically active newspaper publisher. Bhupati has a younger cousin, Amal who is sensitive and intellectual and he is student who comes to his Bhupati‘s house when he gets a university break.

Charu converses with Amal and enjoys being with Amal. Both have talks for long hours and Charu falls in love with Amal. The film was released in the decade when the Indian society was extremely conservative and the story of the film was considered to be very bold.

The current generation filmmakers are considering making the film in their own way whereas Satyajit Ray rejected to make a remake of his own film because he considered his initial film to be a masterpiece. The subject is extremely emotional and Sanjay Leela Bhansal is attracted to the emotional script .Sanjay is considering making the film and he registered the name for himself in August 2007.

Amitabh Neil Ray wish to make a modern version of the film that will be based on international location. The lead actors in the remake will be Rituparna Sengupta, who will play Charulata and Aryeman Ramsay will play the role of Amal. Charu’s husband’s role, Bhupati will be played by Irrfan Khan. [Aryaman Ramsay debuted into films through the film “Family” and his next film to release is “GoodLuck”.] Amitabh Neil Ray will be making the film in both English and Hindi.
