Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sony team up

The international film giant Sony, ties up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for first Hindi film Saawariya (Beloved).

Sony pictures entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America (SCA) has tied up well-known Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to co-produce Sony’s first Hindi film.

Nothing much is known about the movie but Anil Kapoor daughter Sonam and Rishi Kapoor son Ranbir are rumoured to be playing the leading roles in the film.

Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Uday Singh, General Manager of Sony Pictures Releasing of India made the groundbreaking announcement.

Michael Lynton said “India has a rich and prolific film history. We at Sony Pictures recognize the potential and importance of the Indian market and welcome the opportunity to team up with the film industry in India. This is a defining moment for us as a company, and for filmmakers, artists and audiences in India as well.”

“Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s body of work has been in a class of its own,” said Pascal, vice-chairman, SPE, and chairman, Motion Picture Group. His films ‘Khamoshi’ to ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Devdas’ and most recent film ‘Black’ have epitomised sensitivity and embodied visual splendor. “We are indeed proud to associate with one of India’s most revered directors,” she added.

The fact that a major Hollywood studio is collaborating for a Bollywood production is a significant one, and more such collaborations are likely to follow.
